Is Glucosamine and Chondroiin good for old dogs with hip problems?
I heard Glucosamine for dogs was good. I found out about Cosequin, but it is really pricey. While visiting Costco the other day, I picked up this product http://www.wnpharmaceuticals.com/product_details.asp?id=535&cat=53 My dog is 12 years old, is this product safe to give, and what would be the recommend dosage?
Glucosamine chondroitin is great, especially as a preventative for much younger dogs. But a 12 year old dog who’s in pain needs a trip to the vet to be x-rayed to determine how severe his problems are. He might be well past the stage where glucosamine will do him a bit of good. The vet can tell you what he needs to be pain free.

You need to talk to a vet before deciding on any dosages – my dog (Digger) was recently put down at 22 years old after living with arthritis for about 5 years. We gave her Glucosamine pills, but our vet gave us the proper dosage guideline.
The dosage depends on the size – so really, just phone your vet.
Good luck

Yes, they are helpful. Even more helpful if they also contain MSM.
Not enough info to know if that particular product is safe for your dog. Ask your vet.
I use Glyco-Flex III with my dog. I would also recommend Synovi G3.
You need to call your vet about recommended dosages for your particular dog.

Compare the ingredients of what you have with this…this is what i gave my dog that is sold at petsmart.
\\Glucosamine Hydrochloride (from shellfish) – 500 mg
Chondroitin Sulfate (from Bovine Trachea) – 400 mg
Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) – 50 mg
Vitamin C (from Ascorbic Acid) – 50 mg
Zinc (from Zinc Oxide) – 15 mg
Manganese – 5 mg
Copper – 2 mg
The vet told me what mg to look for in the pills. It really seemed to help as her hips do not pop as much when she sits. They also told me to double the dose the first 2 weeks I believe it was.
One half (½) chewable per 40 lbs. body weight daily. Allow four to six weeks for best results.
Just wanted to give you something to compare. I would def run it by your vet though. good luck

My 11 year old dog takes glucosamine for his joints and it’s wonderful. However, he has always taken glucosamine that is made for dogs, which has two advantages: he likes to take it because it’s meat flavored, and secondly, I know how much to give him because it has a weight recommendation on the back. Check to see if the product you are considering has a chart for how much per pound of body weight. Also look for anything that says, "for human consumption only" or anything like that.
Personally, I think it would be best to just go with a product designed for dogs. The Costco near me does actually sell dog glucosamine, so why don’t you check the pet food section the next time you’re there?

Awww. What kind of dog do you have? I have an 11 year old West highland terrier and he has awful hip problems. We tried a lot of stuff but nothing worked so we ended up trying this stuff.

It has glucosamine and chondroitin in it. We give him 2 tablets with his dinner and it works miracles. It is super effective and my dog completely changed within a few days of taking the pill. He perked up and started running arond and playing with our other dog. HEs like a different dog. I highly recommend it for your dog. Just make sure you are consistent and give your dog their pills every day. If you don’t then their problems will come back. I hope everything works out! Best of luck.
Oh and as for the dosage, just call your vet. Tell them what product you have and ask how much you should give your dog. Tell them how big your dog is because thats important.

My GSD has severe hip and elbow displasia. We talked to a specialist and he instructed us to put him on adult human dosages of Osteo Bi Flex w/ MSM, fish oil, and an anti inflammatory called Previcox. Within days Dante was able to climb stairs and jump into the pick up truck after being unable to do these things for a long while.
